Understanding your hardware

Why does my mic keep switching?

You’re in a call, you plug in a new device, and suddenly macOS has moved your microphone to something you didn’t choose — the wrong mic, or a worse one. Then it happens again the next time something connects.

This is one of the most common Mac audio frustrations, and it’s exactly what mixr’s device resolver is built to fix.

Why macOS does this

By default, macOS tends to switch your input and output to whatever device connected most recently. Plug in a monitor, pair a headset, dock your laptop — and macOS may quietly move your mic or your audio onto the new thing, whether or not it’s the one you actually want.

During a call, that’s the worst possible moment for it to happen. You end up on your laptop’s built-in mic when you meant to be on your good one, or your audio jumps to a monitor’s tinny speakers.

What mixr does

mixr keeps a priority list — your ranked preference for which input and output to use — and holds your audio on your preferred device instead of letting macOS switch it out from under you.

  • You set which devices you prefer, in order.
  • mixr keeps you on the best available one from your list.
  • When something connects or disconnects, mixr re-checks against your preferences — not just “whatever plugged in last.”

If your preferred mic dies mid-call, mixr falls back to your next choice — the one you’d have picked — not a random device.

It never switches you silently

When mixr does move your device — because your preferred one disconnected, for example — it tells you, so you’re never surprised by where your audio went. And every decision it makes is visible in the Devices panel, so you can always see why you’re on the device you’re on.

Taking manual control

Sometimes you want a specific device right now, regardless of your priority list. mixr lets you force any device with one click — it holds that choice and backs off its automatic switching until you’re done.

Smart about your hardware

mixr’s resolver also understands some things about how your devices behave:

  • Close your laptop lid and it moves you off the built-in mic (which gets muffled) automatically.
  • AirPods on a call drop to call-quality audio — so mixr can keep your mic on a better device and your audio where it belongs.

The Setup Advisor sets sensible priorities based on your actual hardware when you first run mixr, and you can adjust them anytime.

The goal is simple: your mic and your audio stay where you want them, and when something has to change, you know about it. No more hunting through Sound settings mid-call.
